Architecture Drawing

Typically, when constructing a house, the first step is to create a Site Development Plan. This is essential because factors like rainwater catchment, soil conditions, and County development plans must be considered before any construction begins. However, I took a different approach. I decided to complete the Architecture and Structure Drawing first because I wanted an Architect to review my unique house plan, unsure if it was feasible.
Finding the Right Architect
To find the ideal Architect for my project, I researched and interviewed several architects in my area. Eventually, I found Mr. Richard Donnally, who was very open to my unconventional house idea and transformed my vision into a stunning work of art. I provided him with a simple and unconventional floor plan, and without much discussion, he delivered a beautifully hand-sketched exterior. I plan to frame his sketch once the project is completed.
You never truly know an architect’s skill or artistic talent until you work with them. It’s important to choose an architect you can respect and communicate well with. Mr. Donnally was always precise and focused, never straying off-topic. I appreciate people who can stay on task and guide clients decisively, even when the client’s ideas might not always be practical. Despite a few minor disagreements, Mr. Donnally maintained a professional attitude throughout. I highly recommend him for any project.
An Unorthodox House Plan
I have no intention of subletting any spaces in my house. It will be solely for my family’s use. However, I love the concept of mixed-use spaces, as it fosters a sense of community. Historically, many American towns featured mixed-use buildings, with small stores on the main street and residential spaces above.
In Korea, where I grew up, similar housing designs were common. Small stores were at the front, with residential areas and a small yard in the back. This design was both convenient and functional. Unfortunately, we’ve moved away from this concept, building large houses isolated from neighbors, wasting valuable space.
My wife makes custom wigs and will have her workshop in our house. My son produces music videos and needs his own workspace. I work as a consultant for large companies, designing product packages and formulating products, so I require a multifunctional laboratory and ample storage space. My daughter, a flight attendant, dreams of starting an online business and will need her own workshop.
To avoid feeling constantly at home, I believe workspaces should be separate from the residential areas. I want our home to feel like a blend of commercial and residential spaces, similar to an office or store. Thus, I decided that a mixed-use concept was the best option for our needs.
While we may not use each other’s workspaces frequently, I believe everyone should have the space to explore their ideas and pursue their dreams. With this in mind, I designed a house with five workshops on the first floor and residential spaces on the second floor.
Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Drawing
Mr. Donnally and his team created the house floor plan and structural plan. He suggested having the HVAC company design the Mechanical Plan, as I plan to install non-conventional systems.
To save money, I intend to hire a freelance electrical plan designer, possibly an overseas engineer with lower rates. Then, I will employ a licensed Electrician to review the plan and ensure it meets all necessary standards.
Building this house has been an exciting journey. By combining creativity with practicality, I hope to create a home that perfectly suits our unique needs and aspirations.
